KAPOW Worksite Visit
KAPOWs worksite visit is a unique aspect
of the program and a highlight for students, teachers and volunteers. During the worksite
visit, students experience the workplace in action. This visit is a hands-on opportunity
for students to bring together the major concepts about work they have been learning about
over the course of the school year. In small groups, each with teacher and parent
chaperones, students engage in activities at a number of workstations at their KAPOW
partner company.
During the worksite visit students participate in activities with
many different kinds of employees
to learn about the variety of jobs in one company. In a human resources department,
students can identify qualifications and skills needed for different jobs, then go through
a mock interview. In a marketing department of a local business, students might engage in
a team brainstorming session to create new products, flavors, or packaging. In an
accounting or finance department, students can create an invoice and write a mock check
for it. The worksite visit helps to provide a real life setting where students see and use
important work concepts from the KAPOW curriculum such as teamwork, communication, and
decision making.
Volunteer and teacher activities in KAPOWs
curriculum, and detailed "how-to" manuals guide schools and businesses through
the planning process to ensure a safe, educational and fun worksite visit.
